North Central District Health Dept. will host a SUDS (Substance Use Disorder

North Central District Health Dept. will host a SUDS (Substance Use Disorder Strategy Coalition) event in Shelbyville on from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 10 at Daniel Field, 1145 Washington St. The event is free and there will be food and door prizes such as gift cards and a smart TV while supplies last, incentives and education. The Shelbyville Area NAACP Juneteenth Committee is hosting Juneteenth Celebration Weekend from Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17. The theme is Rooted in History Since 1865.

There will be a Health, Wellness and Job Fair from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, June 16 at the Shelbyville Conference and Welcome Center, 219 7th St. There will be representatives from state programs, nonprofit and community organizations, local businesses for employment opportunities.

On Saturday, June 17 there will be a Juneteenth Parade on Main Street through downtown Shelbyville, starting at 10 a.m. Immediately after the parade there will be a Celebration in the Park at noon at the Clear Creek Park Amphitheater, 717 Burks Branch Rd., and softball field. There will be a corn hole tournament, games, bounce houses, gaming truck, food truck and more. Bring tents and chairs. For more information, email [email protected].

The Wednesday Farmers Market on Main in Shelbyville is at Stargazer Plaza from 5:30-7:30 p.m. each Wednesday through Nov. 1.

Simpsonville's Wednesday Farmers Market is each Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Wiche Park Pavilion.

Shelby County Retired Teachers will meet Tuesday, June 22 at The Stratton Center with registration beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the meal at 6 p.m. Reservations for the meal are due by Friday, June 16 by calling either 502-633-3766 or 502-649-4070.

The Shelby County Public Library Bookmobile community stops are at three locations every other week: Simpsonville, Waddy, and Bagdad. The rest of the Spring schedule and the Summer schedule is as follows:

Simpsonville at The Feed Bucket from 11-noon on June 20, July 18, August 1, August 15, August 29.

Waddy Baptist Church from 11-noon on June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26, Aug 9 and Aug 23.

The Bookmobile has children's books, YA books, an entire wall of large print books, regular print books, and some non-fiction. Readers of all ages will be able to sign up for the Summer Reading Program on the Bookmobile as well.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes will hold a golf scramble for the first time at 1:30 p.m. June 10, Weissinger Hills Golf Course, 2240 Mt. Eden Rd. Hole sponsors needed, prize donation for door prizes and winners, cash donations, business logo merchandise to add to goody bag and team entry is $300 or $75 per person. Prizes awarded. The Shelby County Fair is June 12-17. There will be a Farmers Feeding Family community breakfast, carnival rides, food, pageants, motorsports, talent contest, family dog show, Floral Hall exhibits, mullet contest, animals, laser tag, chainsaw sculptures, medieval combat tournament, boxing and more.

To commemorate the Juneteenth holiday, the library will host an evening with Dr. James-Etta, educator and author, Thursday, June 15 at the Carnegie Library Center, 6-7 p.m.

Shelbyville native and educator Dr. James-Etta has found joy in researching and writing her life story. Dr. James-Etta Goodloe Reed is best known as the author of her first book, "All That is Good: The Journey to Overcoming and Achieving." In this memoir, she chronicled her life experiences through deep examination of her personal journal entries for self-awareness that put her on the path to healing. Her rural upbringing in a multi-generational household is the inspiration for her current genealogy research and her motivation to share her journey to overcome and learn about her roots. Her experiences have taught her that the best relationship she can have is the relationship with herself. And that even in the difficult moments and unsettling discoveries the more she knows, the more she grows. Join us for an evening of sharing and learning with Dr. James-Etta. Shelby County Extension Office will host a Laugh & Learn on Thursday, June 15 at 10 a.m.

A free monthly playdate for children ages 3-5 and their caregiver. The program engages child(ren) in playful activities that are specifically designed to prepare them for kindergarten. Shelby County Parks and the Knights of Columbus will hold fish fry events June 16, July 21, Aug. 18 and Sept. 15 at Clear Creek Park, Col. Sanders Shelter, 717 Burks Branch Rd., Gate 3, from 5-7 p.m.

Friends of Grove Hill asks the community to help clean monuments/gravestones at Grove Hill Cemetery on June 16 and 17, July 21 and 22, Aug. 16 and 18 and Sept. 15 and 16. Shelby Regional Arts Council will host an Open Painters Exhibit for members to paint still life subjects and showcase their work June 16-24. A special artist reception will be June 16 from 5-7 p.m. with refreshments. Calling all grillers for the Shelby County Fair first annual BBQ Smoke-Off Backyard Ribs competition to be held June 17 from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Shelby County Fairgrounds during the county fair. Shelby County Extension Office will offer canning workshops June 20, 9 a.m. or 6 p.m.; Aug/ 4, 10 a.m.; or Aug. 8 — 6 p.m.

Interested in learning how to safely home can? Or interested in honing your skill and brushing up on best practices? Join us for this hands-on workshop where we will cover the basics of home canning. Shelby County Extension Office will host a home based microprocessor workshop on June 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. In person and through Zoom.

Homebased microprocessors are farmers who grow and harvest produce to use in their value-added products. Homebased microprocessors are required to grow a predominant ingredient in the products they make. The first step to becoming certified as a home based microprocessor is to attend a Home based Microprocessor workshop presented by the University of Kentucky. The cost of the workshop is $50. Jennifer each, a sound healing practitioner, will lead a Sound Bath Mediation, an experience where participants are immersed in deep sound vibrations created by musical instruments to induce a calm and mediative state for people who feel stressed or are experiencing pain.

The event is from 10:30-11:30 a.m. June 24 at Carnegie Library Center. Bring comfort items like a mat, blanket and pillow.

The Optimist Club is holding a Fishing Derby June 24 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. free to all elementary and middle school students. Register via email, shelbysaddle [email protected]. Prizes for biggest fish, first caught and most fish. Lunch is provided.

Shelby Regional Arts Council will hold a Bonsai Workshop June 24. An instructor will assist participants to fashion one of these trees. Participants should bring a tree with small foliage such as a juniper or spruce. SRAC members cost $25, while nonmembers pay $30 per person. Seating is limited. Enjoy music from Kentucky Blue, a bluegrass band, on Thursday, June 29 from 6-7 p.m. at the Shelby County Library. The show is similar to the old Grand Ole Opry format with music, magic and comedy. Bring chairs to the front lawn or blankets to sit on.

The Shelbyville, Simpsonville and Shelby County Human Rights Commission will be 6 p.m. July 10 at The Stratton Center due to the 4th of July holiday. The commission normally meets the first Monday of each month unless there is a Monday holiday.

Multi Purpose Community Action Agency is in need of volunteers to deliver meals to homebound seniors. Meals are delivered on Mondays and Wednesdays. It is usually about a two-hour commitment, and the volunteer must provide their own transportation. Most of the meal delivery is within the Shelbyville city limits.
