6 Things That Instantly Cheapen Your Appearance

As we focus on updating our wardrobes and trying new skin, beauty, and hair

As we focus on updating our wardrobes and trying new skin, beauty, and hair products, we want to look our best. But there are a few things we do absentmindedly that instantly cheapen our appearance. Wondering what they are?

We can spend all the money in the world on the best beauty items, hair tools, and wardrobe pieces, but still look like we rolled out of bed in the morning without a second thought (and not in a good way!). While some things are a fashion preference, these things are mostly just a result of laziness or being unaware of how it affects your overall appearance. And who doesn't love the gift of a little more awareness?

Thankfully, there are easy fixes to help you look polished and put together every day of the week. You don't have to spend a ton of money on new items or even spend extra time getting ready in the morning – you just need to know what these things are so that you can avoid them!

Without further ado, here are six things that instantly cheapen your look (and how to fix them!).

While the convenience of keeping a hair tie on your wrist is obvious, it's not the elevated accessory we want to finish off our look. It can also lead to weird tan lines over the summer and skin creasing on our arms. Unless you’re actively working out, there's no real reason to need to keep a hair tie on your wrist, especially those cheap elastic ones you can buy in bulk.

Our solution? Buy a few cute hair ties or silk scrunchies and keep them in your bag or pocket. Still accessible when you need them but not awkwardly hanging out on your wrist.

There's a bra solution for every top, so there is truly no excuse for visible bra straps (or bras, for that matter) in 2023. Strapless bras, racerback bras, convertible bras, pasties, and more can be easily covered by any style of shirt or dress. There's almost nothing worse than putting on a cute outfit and heading out the door, only to notice your visible bra straps in every photo.

To keep our unmentionables, well, unseen, you’ll need to have the right bra for your outfit. Need more help finding the right bra? Check out our guide here.

As the Gen Z generation has thrown themselves into the Y2K fashion aesthetic, plastic jewelry is now being sold in stores for an outrageous price. But, as we have learned, just because it's trending doesn't mean it's cute!

To avoid looking like you just left the arcade, don't give in to the plastic jewelry trend. Instead, invest in a few staple pieces that will work with any of your outfits. And yes, staple jewelry can include color!

A classic pair of jeans is a staple you need in your wardrobe – which probably means you need to go through your existing denim and donate any overly distressed pairs. Ripped jeans are not the classy, chic pants we should be wearing past high school.

Instead, find a versatile and long-lasting pair of jeans that won't go out of style next year. A well-fitting pair of denim can radically update even the simplest of outfits, so a good pair is a must-have! And if you are having a hard time letting go of your ripped jeans, opt for a straight-leg jean with subtle fraying on the hem.

Here are a few of our favorite options!

Ever get dressed for the day and realize the outfit you wanted to wear is a wrinkly mess? Same. But avoid the temptation to just wear it anyway. Wrinkly clothes can make even the best outfit look unpresentable and cheap.

Some pieces are more prone to wrinkling than others. Proper washing and drying methods can keep your clothing clean and smooth, while other items might need a little extra TLC before wear. Steaming your clothes is a great way to get out wrinkles and make you feel like a fashion stylist preparing for an ultra chic photoshoot!

One thing you will notice about highly fashionable women is that their nails are always well taken care of – moisturized, healthy, and shiny. Chipped nail polish, especially in a bright color, is the opposite of elevated!

While we can't always afford a monthly maintenance manicure, there are easy and affordable ways to keep your nails presentable at home. Learning to do your own nails is a great skill to have (and a fun way to destress at the end of the day). And if you’re in a time crunch, buy a few sets of press-on nails to keep on hand for any emergencies.

If you find that your nail polish chips easily, your nails are brittle, or you use your hands too much to maintain a glossy pink mani, a strengthening clear coat will keep your nails shiny without the easily chippable polish.

Often, the things that cheapen our look are things we don't take into consideration before we leave our homes every day. Thankfully, these are just a few easy changes that can instantly elevate your look!
