NEWTON, MA – White Lion Baking Company is coming to Newton.

The paleo, gluten-free, grain-free bakery owned by Elizabeth Miles is opening a location at 95 Wyman Street in the village of Waban in Newton.

The address is the former site of the Soleman Shoe Repair.

The bakery has operated in Mashpee for ten years, offering a selection of gluten-free, grain-free, paleo, and vegan items at their store, online, and wholesale at Whole Foods and several stores across New England.

Miles said she had always been asked by customers to open a location in the Boston area, but didn't consider it as a possibility until last year when she felt she had the support system to expand.

"I have such incredible staff that have been consistent and steady and hardworking, and when you have that kind of support in your business, you see the potential to grow," Miles said.

The Newton location came about quite serendipitously, Miles said.

"One day, I woke up and was like I'm opening another store in a suburb of Boston, and it has to be in a good location, be very small, have a huge parking spot," she said. "And if it comes to me, it comes to me. That's how these things work in my life."

About a month later, a friend called her saying there was a closed business available in Waban, and asked if she ever thought of opening a White Lion location there.

"I was just imagining what I wanted, and then the phone call came," she said.

The Waban location is only about 200 square feet, but Miles said she's more than happy with that.

"We make everything in Mashpee prepackaged and bring it up [to Waban], so it's gonna be like a little White Lion grocery store," she said.

The grand opening of the bakery is scheduled for Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Customers can expect a wide variety of tasty treats, such as cupcakes, muffins, vegan chocolate cream pie, dairy free coffee cake, chocolate donuts, quiche, New York-style cheesecakes with blueberry compote, vegan bars, and vegan peanut butter cups.

The first 200 customers will receive a bag of granola with their order.

"We have no idea how busy it's gonna be," Miles said. "The one thing that I hope is we have enough food!"

The bakery's business hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
